The "detox" industry generates billions of dollars annually selling juice cleanses, detox teas, and restrictive diets that claim to rid your body of toxins. There's one problem: they don't work, because your body already has the most sophisticated detoxification system ever designed.

Your Built-In Detox System

The Liver — Your liver is a chemical processing powerhouse. It converts toxic substances into water-soluble compounds that can be excreted through urine or bile. It processes alcohol, medications, metabolic waste, and environmental toxins 24/7.

The Kidneys — Filter approximately 180 liters of blood daily, removing waste products and excess substances through urine.

The Lungs — Remove carbon dioxide and other volatile waste products with every breath.

The Skin — Excretes small amounts of waste through sweat (though this is a minor pathway).

The GI Tract — Eliminates solid waste and houses a microbiome that helps neutralize harmful substances.

Why "Detox" Diets Are Nonsense

No clinical trial has ever demonstrated that a detox diet removes toxins more effectively than your organs already do. Here's what actually happens:

Juice cleanses cause weight loss through severe caloric restriction (most provide 500-800 kcal/day). This is water and glycogen loss, not fat loss. Weight returns when normal eating resumes.

Detox teas often contain senna, a laxative. You're not "detoxing" — you're having diarrhea. Some also contain dangerously high caffeine levels.

What Actually Supports Your Detox Organs

Instead of expensive cleanses, support your liver and kidneys with:

  • **Adequate hydration** (30-40ml per kg bodyweight)
  • **Cruciferous vegetables** (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts) — contain sulforaphane that supports liver Phase 2 detoxification
  • **Adequate protein** — your liver needs amino acids (especially glycine, taurine, glutamine) for detoxification pathways
  • **Limiting alcohol** — the single biggest thing you can do for your liver
  • **Fiber** — binds toxins in the gut for elimination
